My Job Title Quest

Like everybody else, I sometimes get stuck on a problem. It is nothing huge but this particular problem bothers me. I updated my job title on LinkedIn several times over the last few months. It is not that I can’t focus. I can. And it has nothing to do with the fact that, as many owners of a new business, I wear many hats.

My problem is that what I do is unique. No matter how many times I looked for inspiration at job descriptions in job search sites, how many times I talked to people about what I do, how many times I sat down to write it down, I can’t find the right job title to describe what I do.

I Want Your Feedback

What should I do? The way I see it is either to invent a job title that nobody will understand or search for on Google, or to go with an unsexy list of standard job titles. Right now, I settled for a list: President, Digital Strategist, Product Manager, UX Lead.

Concretely, I help our clients get traction and grow their online business. For some clients, it means creating and putting a tailored digital marketing strategy into action. For others, it means building with them the right digital product. For others, it means focusing on what it takes for delivering an awesome user experience.

What do you think? Do I worry too much about something that doesn’t really matter. We all heard that job titles doesn’t mean anything anymore. I kind of agree with that view. But then again, what about people who are looking for a consultant or an agency with my set of skills? By listing the job titles, do I increase my chances that you think about me for your contract? What do you think?

As far as I’m concerned, if you’re the president of the company your title should be president. Nothing pretentious in it, call a spade a spade. 😉

When you put yourself out there in social media and you start having conversations which people can hear… they’ll see how bright you are. They’ll see how committed you are. They’ll see how ambitious you are. And they’ll want to connect up with you. You won’t need anybody’s referral, you won’t need anybody’s testimonial. You doing just what you do naturally will make a HUGE difference in your business. It’s very simple, it’s very straightforward, the only thing you need to do is… to do it!

Thank you Burak for your comments. You summarized why talented business people should blog and why I believe this is a good investment in the mid to long-term range.
